Three Black Tide slips return with the outcome left "unknown"

Engraved for this edition

A runner brought the week’s dispatch bundle in a pitch-stiff sailcloth and asked if we might dry it somewhere that does not already smell of decisions.

The week’s number that fits on one board

The ledgers show 6,568 departures in the last seven days, which is what happens in any archipelago where governors decide the sea is faster than argument. Fleets left for raids, for conquest work, for what passes as diplomacy at oar-point, and returned with the usual mix of plunder and opinions.

Of those sailings, 1,146 were filed as espionage attempts, and 1,093 of them succeeded. The few that did not succeed have been exceptionally quiet about it, which is merciful.

The Black Tide, battered and still not conversational

The Black Tide remains high on the realm board by sheer weight of holdings, seventy-six islands still marked to its name, and it continues its habit of answering attention with silence and iron. That has not discouraged anyone, only organized them.

roxx has been the most methodical of the week’s hands, entered for fifteen recorded attacks against the Tide across Small Island, Medium Island, Large Island, and Black Tide Fester. The tally is remarkable for its lack of mourning, 2,556,654 sent and none recorded missing, which reads like a scribe’s fantasy and appears, for once, to be true.

Windy Walrus, who keeps enough ships to make the horizon look busy, pressed four times into Black Tide Shroud and added further strikes on Medium Island and Black Tide Blight. Those slips include building damage to main houses on the Tide side, the sort of detail that turns naval strategy into carpentry by force. The carpenters have not been consulted.

Flowkap also joined the week with a clean set of figures, two victories against the Tide on Large Island and the main house marked down from 16 to 11. The number is plain and therefore suspicious, but the ink holds.

A war of receipts, with a brief return of bad penmanship

If this week had behaved properly, it would have ended there, with neat columns and predictable grudges. Instead, three battle slips against the Tide returned with the outcome line left as “unknown”.

Two of these are attached to Windy Walrus’s entries, at Black Tide Slime and Black Tide Noose, where the rest of the report is written as if the clerk simply became tired of certainty. The third is filed under Miko Misan at Black Tide Embers, 18,617 sent, all returning, and no one willing to swear in ink what happened between shore and counting table.

This is not the first time the outcome line has misbehaved this season, and the quartermaster has begun laying blank parchments beside the war board the way a priest lays out shrouds. He says it helps the clerks accept disappointment early.

RattleHook Port, where activity has become a local climate

Miko Misan has not slowed to watch the ink curdle. Alongside the Tide work, RattleHook Port also records a hard week of raids against Ankhor’s islands, with mixed results, including one defeat at 000 Ankhoria that returned fewer men than it sent.

The same governor, in the same week, also appears with victories against the Tide at Medium Island and Small Island, and a smaller raid at Large Island that brought back more lumber than certainty. The harbor master asked whether “unknown” counts as a victory for morale.

It does not.

Smaller wakes in the big surf

While the larger names were busy pushing at the Tide’s doors, the lesser lanes did not go quiet.

Turtle Blues continues to lead the raid counts by sheer repetition, 1,420 raids recorded, which is not a strategy so much as a refusal to stop moving. Florentia follows at 918, and was also entered this morning for throwing back a Black Tide assault at BrinyDrum Point. A defense that holds is still news, if only because it saves paperwork.

Lusty Longboat climbed to #8 on the realm rankings board during this same week, which is a polite rise that nevertheless required a great deal of rowing and the steady patience to file it afterward. The climbing was noted by the clerks, who like a clear sentence.

Gregor Conquer, still running on one island and pure momentum, plundered 664 gold, 524 stone, and 408 lumber from ISLES OF BOBYDOG. It is the kind of haul that would not buy a fleet, but it will buy the right sort of dinner if one avoids asking the cook to prepare it.

New keels, old habits

The archipelago took in sixty-one new governors this week, enough fresh names to make the roll clerk ask for a second wrist. A few have already begun the customary first acts of a frontier governor, which are scouting, raiding, and learning that the sea does not care about confidence.

Wilhelm1908 was recorded scouting both Small Island and Medium Island, then raiding them repeatedly, as if testing whether the islands will eventually object out loud. They have not.

E. Von Blücher has taken the simpler route and raided Large Island once, a neat line that suggests either restraint or a short attention span. Either can be cultivated.

Mighty Massi, meanwhile, raised both LobsterSwabby Perch and TempestWhale Shoal to full Settlement standing in the same day. It is pleasant to record construction that is not immediately followed by shouting.

GrumpyScallywag Roost, or how a goat becomes civic infrastructure

Among the newest arrivals, Tretger has already produced enough scouting slips on Small Island and Medium Island to be remembered by the filing staff, which is an achievement of the wrong kind. More notably, GrumpyScallywag Roost has filed an arrangement titled “The Oracle of the Eastern Pass”.

The outcome, as written, is to move the goat to the village square under ranger escort and allow controlled public consultations, because the queue at the eastern pass is blocking ranger work. After last week’s notary mark was eaten, it is clarifying to see the animal’s relationship to documents formalized at last.

The quartermaster has requested that any prophecies be submitted in duplicate and kept away from the seal-wax. He has also asked who, precisely, is paying the goat.

Closing entries

Trade was brisk in the marketplace trading ledgers, 111 exchanges completed across the week, which proves that even in a naval strategy season of raids and conquest, someone is still willing to swap stone for lumber like civilized people.

The week ends as it began, with sea-lanes full, councils tired, and ink refusing to tell the whole truth when it would be most convenient. I will order more drying sand.
