The Charts Are New, Which Is Always a Warning

Engraved for this edition

The governors who trusted the old Lumen charts now have less paper and more sea. The Lumen Rupture has taken its dead and left the map altered, though no sensible clerk will write that sentence in ink darker than tea. Four rose there, and four are dead. The charts have been redrawn, which means the charts have admitted being wrong, a rare act of humility from an object usually nailed to a wall.

The pilot boat turned back this week, and the pilot has not spoken since. That silence may prove wiser than half the testimony we are likely to receive at the Harbor Board, where a governor with a ruler can always be found to explain why the sea should have behaved differently. Elsewhere, roxx finished grim work at several marks, and the gulls returned where they had been absent. When gulls look like good news, a week has had too much weather in it.

The page is cleaner now.

It is not clean.

The old quarrel, still afloat

Dominion and Hannah did not let the rupture have the whole week. Their quarrel ran long enough and hard enough to leave nearly eighteen thousand fallen between them, with Dominion paying by far the heavier bill. That is the sort of sum that makes treasurers speak softly while captains ask for fresh rope without meeting anyone’s eye.

roxx was often the name at the sharp end. OmegaFlub bore the worst of several signed blows, with stores carried off from shoals and havens whose names will now sound less merry to the people who keep warehouses there. Let the record stay plain: victories broke defenders and emptied stores. They did not, by that fact alone, make islands change hands. We repeat this because banners breed gossip faster than mildew breeds in a rope locker.

Hannah did not vanish from the ledger, and Dominion did not depart satisfied. That is the unpleasant shape of an unfinished war. It gives both sides reasons to speak of honour and necessity, with repayment waiting at the quay like a creditor in a clean hat.

Thursday against the black water

Then came Thursday, and the week changed weight. Against the Black Tide, the losses rose to about one hundred and thirty thousand, and a long slate of holdings was freed in a single sweep of action. The clerks had been counting skirmishes and raids; suddenly they were counting cleared harbours and the places where the old black mark no longer sat over the entry.

No one thanked the clerks for this promotion.

This was not routine tidying at the edge of the map. It was a campaign large enough to make the earlier days look like governors arguing over a puddle while the harbour floods behind them. Miko Misan and roxx appear elsewhere in the week’s heavy columns against the Tide, as do Flowkap and Dindi, though Thursday belonged less to one name than to the rare sight of the whole sea seeming to lean the same way.

Next week will tell whether the Lumen charts hold, which is to say whether anyone may put a cup down upon them without it sliding into a new abyss. It will also tell whether Thursday’s clearings can be held. As for Dominion and Hannah, the ledger has not yet learned to close that drawer quietly. The Board has ordered more ink. This is not optimism, merely procurement.
