Under a Crumbling Roof

Engraved for this edition

Stout Sealion began the week with a realm and ended it under the dull sound of walls giving way. There are collapses that announce themselves with flame. Others arrive as a clerk’s notice, folded badly and smelling of damp rope. This one has the look of the second kind, which is no kinder for being quieter.

Beneath that falling roof, Captain Jack and Dominion gave the week its hard edge. Their quarrel did not stretch lazily across the days. It struck in a concentrated rush, the sort that leaves the Harbor Board pretending the ink was already on the desk and not running down anyone’s sleeve.

Captain Jack and Dominion

By Wednesday, the rivalry had become paired wars, more than ninety battles, and about 2,400 fallen. The losses were close enough to make any boast look overdressed, though Dominion came away with fewer names to carry to the mourners. A narrow margin is still a margin. It is also a poor blanket.

No clerk asked for a second ledger.

Among the signed actions, Flowkap of Dominion broke through against Captain Jack at BrinyGalley Cove and carried away a heavy store of goods. Elsewhere, the same day proved that a fleet can be busy and still learn humility. The sea is generous with lessons and charges full price for most of them.

That is a rivalry, not weather.

The Tide breaks for a day

Then Thursday changed the size of the page. The struggle against the Black Tide had already filled the week with smoke and splinters, with the usual arithmetic of exhausted quays close behind, but this surge stood apart. More holdings were freed in that rush than in the rest of the week together, a fact that makes even the neatest ledger look as if it has been grabbed by the collar.

roxx of Dominion headed the week’s tally of Black Tide holdings beaten. Miko Misan also cut deep into that dark line, as did Flowkap of Dominion and Becks1428. These victories are easy to mishandle in speech after supper. A beaten holding is not the same thing as an island changing hands unless a colony follows after the defenders fall. Still, freeing a place from the Tide is no small entry. Ask any dockhand told to unload salvage before breakfast.

Willowcrag Nook

For all the week’s larger movements, Willowcrag Nook deserves its quiet place in the column. Dignified Dingo of Hannah defeated Chiselled Cook there on Thursday, with fewer than two hundred fallen and a modest store carried away. It will not bend the map by itself. It will be remembered clearly by those who had to count the cost.

There is value in such smaller reports. They keep the Chronicle honest when the grand totals begin to swagger. A realm may crumble and alliances may trade blows, but much of the world is still decided in coves where someone has to mend the rope afterward.

Next week, watch Stout Sealion first. A crumbling realm leaves room for rescue and opportunism, plus official notices written in the tone of a clerk who has misplaced the key to the cabinet. Watch also whether Thursday’s blow against the Black Tide was a turning of the tide or only one magnificent shove. The sea will know before the clerks do, as usual.
