Buildings

Every settlement rises from bare ground and ambition. The structures a Governor raises determine what the island can produce, who it can shelter, and how fiercely it can defend itself. This chapter catalogues every structure known to the archipelago, from the humblest mine to the tallest watch-tower.

The Workyard

Only one structure may be raised or improved at a time. The workyard handles a single project. Governors who plan their build order carefully will outpace those who do not. The Main HouseMain House is the great standing accelerator: each level shaves another 5% off the remaining build time, compounding as it rises. By Level 12 a project runs in roughly half its base duration.

For a one-off push, goods can speed up a project too. When starting a build, spend repair timber from the stores to cut the construction time — each crate shaves a slice off, though no amount will buy away the whole job. The same trick hastens troop training, ship-building, and research, each with its own fitting goods.

Master Quill
Master Quill: Margin note
The Main House governs the pace of all works and the size of the coin vault. A Governor who upgrades it early will see every subsequent project completed in shorter order, and can hold more coin reserves for the Bazaar.

The Settlement

The backbone of any domain. The Main HouseMain House stands at the centre of every settlement. It unlocks new structures and speeds construction across the board. Around it rise the civic works that keep a population housed, fed, and productive: HousingHousing provides roofs for workers and soldiers, the FarmFarm sustains food supply, the ChurchChurch slowly gathers Lumen, the StorehouseStorehouse guards the treasury from raiders, and the MarketplaceMarketplace opens the door to trade with neighbouring Governors. A WorkshopWorkshop turns the settlement toward durable goods, storing what you craft and loot and housing the trade that makes it. And when the day's work is done, the TavernTavern opens its games of nerve: every level of the tavern earns a table credit, and each table costs one to open for good. The games pay nothing and cost nothing to play. They are for pride, best scores, and passing the tide.

The Storehouse is the silent partner of every mine. Without adequate storage, surplus production spills into the dirt, and without protection, raiders will strip the rest. Build it early, build it tall.

The Mines

Gold, stone, and lumber are the three pillars of the material economy. Each has its own extraction site: the Gold MineGold Mine, the Stone QuarryStone Quarry, and the Lumber MillLumber Mill. The land provides a modest trickle even without a mine, but a well-developed extraction operation dwarfs the passive yield many times over. Most experienced Governors raise all three early and keep them climbing. A high-level mine is the foundation of everything that follows.

Gold is always the first shortage. Every wall, every ship, every research project demands it. Raise the Gold Mine first and keep it a level ahead of the others. The rest follows from there.

Arms & Fleet

When diplomacy fails and walls are not enough, a Governor must muster forces. The BarracksBarracks trains land units, stone throwers, spearfighters, archers, and siege catapults, while the HarbourHarbour launches warships, merchant vessels, and colonisation fleets. Both require a developed Main House before they can be established: the Barracks opens at Level 2, the Harbour at Level 5. Higher levels of each reduce training times and unlock access to stronger forces. The Barracks also gates how many catapults an island can stockpile (see Combat), and the Harbour gates the size of your fleet: each level adds ship berths, and bigger hulls take more of them (see Harbour berths).

Marshal Voss
Marshal Voss: Field order
The Barracks come first. Land forces defend the island before any fleet is built. Once the Harbour opens, a Governor gains reach, but reach without a garrison at home is an invitation.

Fortifications

Walls, watchers, and war hounds are the three layers of island defence. The Stone WallStone Wall multiplies the defensive strength of every defender on the island, including standing settlement defenses. The Watch-TowerWatch-Tower spots approaching fleets at a distance, giving the Governor precious time to prepare or call for aid. The KennelsKennels house scent-ward patrols that make the island harder to spy upon. Together, they turn a settlement from an easy target into a fortress worth avoiding.

Marshal Voss
Marshal Voss: Field order
A wall without a garrison is decoration. A garrison without a wall is a sacrifice. Build both, and your enemies will look elsewhere.

The Laboratory

Knowledge compounds. The LaboratoryLaboratory is where scholars study weapons technology: improvements to spear, shield, bow, catapult, and sail that permanently strengthen every unit trained afterward. Research is slow and costly, but its effects are lasting. A Governor who invests early in the Laboratory will field forces that punch well above their numbers. Consult the Research chapter for the full catalogue of advancements.

Scholars also quicken the pace at which charts are read. The Laboratory level on a Governor's capital island shortens the scouting delaybetween regions on the world chart, useful when chasing treasure islands before a rival reaches them.

Master Quill: Margin note
Research cannot be rushed, but neither should it be delayed. Every day without a Laboratory is a day your rivals grow sharper while your forces remain unchanged.

Common questions

Why raise the Main House early?

It unlocks key buildings and compounds build-time savings across every later project. It also governs the coin vault used by the Bazaar.

Which buildings should a young settlement protect first?

Keep the Storehouse, Housing, Farm, and raw-material sites close to the settlement's growth. Storage prevents waste and plunder; housing and food keep new workers useful.

Why is the Church listed with settlement works?

The Church produces Lumen rather than raw material. It belongs beside civic life and the Shrine, not with the mines that feed construction.

Can I tear a building down?

The ChurchChurch can be torn down from its build view. Your masons salvage a quarter of the materials sunk into it back to your stores; the rest is lost to the work. Tearing down the Church also drains every drop of stored Lumen — which is the point: a shore with no Lumen no longer glows brightly enough to draw the Black Tide's proactive raids. No other building can be torn down for now.
